Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In the age of rapid technological advancement, digital media has emerged as a key player in the preservation and documentation of cultural heritage, including historical artifacts. Bauchi State, with its rich cultural history and numerous historical sites, faces challenges in preserving and documenting its artifacts. Traditionally, physical conservation methods were employed, but these can be vulnerable to environmental factors, deterioration, and lack of resources. In recent years, however, the adoption of digital media technologies such as digital archiving, 3D imaging, and virtual galleries has revolutionized the way cultural heritage is preserved. Studies by Hassan et al. (2023) highlight the growing role of digital media in preserving artifacts by creating digital archives that can be easily accessed and shared globally, providing greater protection and accessibility. This study seeks to explore how digital media is used in Bauchi State to preserve historical artifacts, the impact of these practices on cultural conservation, and the challenges involved.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media offers great potential for preserving cultural heritage, there is insufficient research on its application in preserving historical artifacts in Bauchi State. Many artifacts remain under threat due to poor preservation practices, inadequate funding, and the lack of expertise in digital archiving. This study aims to assess how digital media can be utilized to preserve historical artifacts in Bauchi and the extent to which these technologies are being adopted.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will shed light on the importance of digital media in cultural conservation efforts, particularly in Bauchi State. The findings will be useful for heritage management organizations, government agencies, and cultural institutions seeking to enhance the preservation of historical artifacts through digital means.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses specifically on the role of digital media in preserving historical artifacts within Bauchi State. It does not explore other regions or broader methods of artifact preservation, nor does it cover all cultural heritage issues within the state.
